Endings
The nine endings, and the dash
Nine kinds of ending, counted the same way, against the far larger number of sittings that simply ran out of work.
What ended them
Ninety-four sittings ended because the place stopped working. A hundred and thirty-one ended because the work did. The second number is larger and gets read less.
The bare end
A hundred and thirty-one sittings that nothing in the room ended, and why the biggest category in the record is the one with no mark.
The light changed
Twenty-four endings, the largest single cause in the record, and the one most reliably attached to a particular place and a particular hour.
Temperature
Eighteen endings, the second largest cause, divided unevenly between cold and warm and concentrated in three dwellings out of nine.
The place was wanted
Fourteen endings where somebody else needed the spot. The only cause involving another person, and thirteen of them at one kind of table.
Noise arrived
Twelve endings, spread more evenly across dwellings than any other cause, and as often from outside the building as from inside it.
Ran out of surface
Nine endings where the place simply was not big enough for what the work needed. The cause that came out of the pilot week and would not have been guessed.
What was needed was elsewhere
Seven endings where somebody left to fetch something and did not come back. The shortest sittings here, and perhaps not endings at all.
The seat itself
Six endings in forty-five person-days. The object most written about in connection with working at home, and the second smallest cause in this record.
