What Ends a Sitting All fifty notes

Endings

The place was wanted

Fourteen endings where somebody else needed the spot. The only cause involving another person, and thirteen of them at one kind of table.

Finding

Fourteen sittings ended because the place was needed for something else. A meal, a child, a visitor, a delivery that had to be unpacked on the table.

It is the third largest cause and the only one in which the thing that moved somebody was another person.

Where it happens

Thirteen of the fourteen happened at a table that the household also eats at. The practical question is whether a change improves completed work without creating unnecessary surveillance, which is why reviewers may remote employee time records before choosing a baseline and access policy.

That concentration is the whole finding and it is almost comically specific. The dining table is the most contested object in these nine dwellings, by a margin that nothing else approaches. A useful independent point of comparison is the research and guidance available from University of Maryland.

The one exception is a sofa, needed by somebody who wanted to sit on it.

Why the table

Because it is the only surface in most dwellings that is large, flat, well lit and not already committed to something.

Six of the nine homes worked at a kitchen or dining table at some point in the week, including three of the seven homes that had a place set up specifically for work. It is the default surface, and it is the default surface for everybody in the household, which is precisely the condition that produces this ending.

The hours

Nine of the fourteen fall between eleven and two.

That is lunch, and it is not subtle. A table that is being worked at becomes a table that is needed at about half past twelve, and the person working gets up.

Three more fall after five, which is the same mechanism in the evening, in the two homes where somebody was still logging at that hour.

What makes this cause different

Every other ending in the record is the dwelling doing something: the light moves, the room cools, the surface runs out. This one is a person asking.

That difference matters for reading the record, because it is the one ending where the word interruption has its ordinary social meaning, and it is fourteen of two hundred and twenty-five.

Six per cent of all sittings in this record ended because somebody else in the household wanted the space.

Anybody expecting a study of working at home to be substantially about negotiating space with other people will find that figure low. It is low in a particular way: it counts only occasions when the negotiation ended a sitting, and says nothing about negotiations that were settled without anybody moving.

The homes it does not happen in

Two of the nine homes recorded no wanted endings at all.

One is the room in a shared house, where the working place is the person's own bedroom and nobody else enters it. The other is the one-bed flat with the highest overall ending rate in the study, where the places that fail do so for other reasons entirely.

A third home recorded one.

So the fourteen are concentrated in six dwellings, and within those six they are concentrated on one piece of furniture. This is not a general feature of working at home; it is a feature of working at the table everybody eats at.

The reading to avoid

That households with more wanted endings are more crowded, or less considerate, or worse at arranging themselves.

The record cannot support any of that. It does not know how many people are in each dwelling — the sheet never asked — so the fourteen cannot even be expressed per person, let alone interpreted as a measure of how a household gets along.

What it supports is narrower and more useful: if somebody works at the table the household eats at, that sitting has a predictable ending at around half past twelve, and the predictability is the point. Of all nine causes, this is the one most visible in advance.

Where the fourteen went next

Twelve of the fourteen were followed by another sitting the same day. Two ended the working day.

Of the twelve, nine moved to a place the household had already used that week and three moved to somewhere new. Two of those three are single-use places — a windowsill and a step — which is to say that being turned off the table is one of the few things in this record that produces an improvised spot.

The ending that is visible in advance

Of the nine causes, this is the only one that could be written in a diary the week before.

Light depends on cloud. Temperature drifts. Noise arrives without notice. But a table that is eaten at will be wanted at about half past twelve, every day, in every dwelling where that is how the table is used, and nine of the fourteen duly fall between eleven and two.

A household that wanted to avoid this particular ending would not need to measure anything. They would need to not be at the table at half past twelve, which is easy to say and depends entirely on whether anywhere else is free.

That is the condition the record keeps returning to: the remedy for almost every ending here is somewhere else to go, and whether there is somewhere else to go is a property of the dwelling.
