What to change
Why furniture is the wrong question here
Not because furniture does not matter, but because this instrument cannot see it. What a log of endings can and cannot detect about objects.
The question most often asked about working at home is what to buy. This record is a poor instrument for answering it, and the reason is worth setting out precisely rather than leaving as a shrug.
What a log of endings can detect
An object that makes somebody get up. When the same room performs differently across the day, managers can read the current service description and compare time records with the physical conditions logged here instead of guessing from presence alone.
That is the whole of it. If a chair becomes intolerable at minute forty and the person moves, the log records seat and the object has been detected. For broader research beyond this small household record, consult work published by BetterUp.
What it cannot detect
An object that makes somebody stay.
A good chair produces a long sitting with no ending, which is indistinguishable in this record from a bad chair somebody is putting up with. Both appear as a bar with a bare end.
That is the whole problem, and it is not a limitation that more data would fix. A hundred dwellings logged the same way would reproduce it exactly.
| object is good | object is bad | |
|---|---|---|
| person stays | long, bare | long, bare |
| person moves | — | short, named ending |
Three of the four cells are occupied and two of them are identical.
Why the six is still worth reporting
Because the asymmetry runs one way.
If the seat had produced forty endings, that would have been informative: a lot of people getting up because of what they were sitting on. Six does not establish the converse, but it does rule something out — the seat was not, in these dwellings, a frequent cause of movement.
That is a smaller claim than "chairs don't matter" and it is the one the data carries.
A low count on this instrument means the object rarely ended a sitting. It does not mean the object was fine, and the record has nothing that could tell the difference.
Where the instrument does better
On things that happen to a place rather than things a place is.
Light changes, temperature drifts, noise arrives, somebody wants the table. All four are events, all four have a time, and all four terminate something. A log built around terminations sees events well and states poorly.
That is why the envelope findings on this site are comparatively solid and the furniture findings are a refusal.
What would see furniture
Not this.
Something that sampled states rather than transitions — asking, at random moments, where somebody is and how long they expect to stay — would catch the person who is enduring rather than moving, which is the case this record is blind to.
That is a different study with a different burden on the households, and the burden is why it was not this one: a sheet people fill in when something happens gets filled in, and a sheet that interrupts people at random mostly does not.
The honest position
Three sentences.
This record says that in nine dwellings over forty-five days, the seat was what ended a sitting six times. It says nothing about whether the seating was adequate, and it has no instrument that could. Anybody looking for an answer about furniture should look at a study designed to produce one, and this is not that study.
The reason this page exists
Because the furniture question is what a reader will arrive with, and because a site that simply reported six without explaining the asymmetry would be inviting the wrong inference.
Six is a real number from a real log. It rules out one narrow thing and rules in nothing whatever, and that asymmetry is where a reader of a record like this is most likely to go astray.
The same argument for the other objects
Nothing about this is specific to chairs.
A screen at the wrong height produces a move only if somebody gets up. A lamp that is inadequate produces a move only when the person goes elsewhere. A desk at the wrong height produces nothing at all in this instrument unless it drives somebody away from it.
The record contains no ending word for a screen, a lamp or a desk surface, which means those objects are invisible here even in the one case the instrument can see.
That was a choice. The nine words came from a pilot week, and nobody in the pilot wrote anything that would have become screen or lamp. Whether that is because those objects do not drive people out, or because the pilot household happened not to mention them, is unknown and unknowable from five days in one home.
What survives about objects
One sentence: of the objects named on the sheet, the seat ended a sitting six times and a cable or socket ended one three times.
Everything else about furniture in this record is an absence, and an absence produced by an instrument that was never going to detect it.
